From Jimbo To Hero: Here's The Most Bizarre Shootout Goal You'll See Today

I’ll tell ya what. We need to start importing some of these refs from Switzerland here because their attention to detail is so much better than what we’ve been seeing in the NHL lately. Refs in the NHL are so whistle happy. They’re ready to blow a play dead any chance they can get (i.e. blowing this play dead in Toronto the other night). It would have been pretty easy for these refs to see the Davos player lose control of the puck and whistle this one dead. But they got the right call on the ice. Even though the player had to go backwards to retrieve the puck, the puck itself never stopped moving either toward the goal line or in a lateral direction. That’s a bit of a misconception when it comes to shootout attempts. Some people think it has to do with the momentum of the player when, in fact, the only thing that matters is the movement of the puck. And as long as the puck doesn’t stop it’s momentum and move backwards, the attempt is still good to go. Buddy over here loses control of the puck, could have ended up being a ‘Jimbo Of The Week’ nominee, but the puck keeps moving laterally and he’s able to pick it back up and stuff it in the back of the net.

I’m not sure if you should still be able to break out the silencer celly after having the puck get phantom checked off your stick in the middle of a shootout

…but I guess if it’s the game winner then I’ll allow it. Still might want to be careful with that one though.

P.S. – You’re not allowed to hate on me for a clickbait-y title if it’s true. Only one game in the NHL last night went to a shootout and none of the goals scored in that shootout could be classified as “bizarre”. So technically speaking, this is without a doubt the most bizarre shootout goal you’ll see today. I am reporting the facts, not begging for clicks. It’s called being a journalist.
