A Former GM Says Milwaukee Has No Chance In Hell To Keep Giannis
So this has been floated around for a little bit as there’s been a rumor that a smaller-market like Milwaukee wouldn’t be able to hold on to Giannis. Now, this is the first time that I can remember a former GM or someone like that making such a bold statement. Granted he sounds like Vince McMahon’s entrance music, which is all I can hear now, it’s still a bold statement.
Now, the good news is Giannis isn’t going anywhere any time soon. He’s locked up on a contract for another three years. So unless there’s growing frustration over the next two years and Giannis pulls a Paul George and says he’s not going to re-sign, Giannis is with Milwaukee for another three. He’s even making good money, as he’s making $24, $25 and $27 million each of the next three years. After that he’s eligible for the supermax, which he can only sign with the Bucks.
But, now comes the whole loyalty, small-market vs destination and if the Bucks can land free agents. On top of all that it will also be can the Bucks actually win a playoff series? They haven’t won a series in 17 years, including last year’s first round game.
There are some intriguing pieces here. The Bucks let Jabari Parker walk. They have pieces that fit Giannis’ game in Malcolm Brogdon and drafting Donte DiVincenzo. There’s only two guys on the roster that are 30 or older – Brook Lopez (30) and Ersan Ilyasova (31). So the next couple of years is going to be important. Win a couple of playoff series, draft well, make smart signings. More importantly keep marketing Giannis – landing the 2k cover was helpful. Show that he can make his money in a market like Milwaukee.
But, the fact a former GM said this does hold a little bit of value.
