Tom Wilson Will Play For Free This Season

So we already know that Tom Wilson has been suspended for 20 games this season. Big loss for the Caps, but after doing this podcast with Biz and Whitney for a few years now I have begun to learn there is a lot more going on here then him not just playing games. This guy essentially is going to play for free this season now.

Wilson signed a new deal in July, a 6-year deal worth around $31m with an AAV of $5.166. His base salary for this upcoming season? $1.1m. So Wilson will literally play for free this season. Granted, when he signed a deal his new ticket in July he got a $5m signing bonus. Genius move by Willy. Definitely knew he was getting an early suspension this season.

I mean, $5m is no joke. He just better hope he didn’t spend it all this summer. I mean, the guys isn’t going to get one check this season, not a single one, so that $5m is going to go awfully quick.

Now what for Wilson? Does he change his game and just ride out this huge ticket? Playing the whole “the NHL made me change my game” card? Or does he continue to walk the line and maybe just make a few small changes? Either way, you get a 20 game suspension you got to do something. Because the next time he fucks up, he’s done for a full season, then a life time ban.

I guess we are just going to have to wait and see.
