Everything's Fine: Millennium Tower In San Francisco is Leaning, Sinking, And Now Has Windows Cracking For No Reason

Business Insider

At 58 stories and 645 feet high, the luxury Millennium Tower is the tallest concrete structure in San Francisco. It’s also one of the most unstable.

On Saturday, an apartment owner detected a large fissure in his window on the high-rise’s 36th floor, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Earlier that day, residents reported hearing a series of creaking noises, followed by a loud pop.

As of Tuesday, the building’s management company had 72 hours to report on the issue. Though officials blocked off part of the sidewalk, a spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection said there was no safety risk for pedestrians.

Hand up, I did not graduate with a degree in architecture or engineering, but I did have quite a few friends that did (sick brag). From living with them for a few years I can relay to you that a building that is leaning, sinking, and has windows breaking with glass with some bad news bears. My friends, who is a civil engineer, had this comment on the matter:

“Lateral seismic movement combined with differential settlement could mean everyone dies”

Bad. You can’t tell me with a straight face that a building with all of these issues, centered in the heart of earthquake city is totally fine to exist in society. What are we talking about? The surrounding streets need to be evacuated so they can condemn the building and take it apart. No one is safe in the whole city. We get a little 6.0er and this bad boy goes down faster you can say “earthquake.”

Who is living in this building thinking everything is fine? Imagine waking up and realizing your window just cracked in the middle of the night? Yeah no biggie, the building is just imploding before your very eyes. This fucking thing is sinking into the ground. SINKING. In a city with earthquakes going on 24/7. The designers and builders clearly went on a huge boondoggle and failed to realize they built this thing on an uneven surface. Genius. You couldn’t pay me to spend a night in this death trap.

Jojo really hit the nail on the head here. He gets it.
