CM Punk's Court Days Aren't Over - His Former Best Friend Colt Cabana Is Now Suing Him
Chicago Sun Times- After fighting together on the same side and winning a defamation lawsuit two months ago, Colt Cabana and CM Punk are now on opposite sides of a legal battle.
Cabana, whose real name is Scott Colton, is suing UFC fighter CM Punk, whose real name is Phillip Jack Brooks, for breach of contract and fraud in Cook County Circuit Court.
Cabana and Punk have close friends since their days in Chicago’s independent pro wrestling circuit.
Cabana’s lawsuit contends Punk promised to help him out with the legal bills they amassed fighting the defamation lawsuit. Cabana claims Punk told him in a text that he would be “100% covered.”
Punk has failed to keep that promise, leaving him with unpaid legal bills totaling $513,736, according to the lawsuit.
Punk asked Cabana to pay half of the legal fees, which comes out to $256,868, saying “You are on your own.”
Cabana is asking for $200,000 in general damages, along with $1 million in punitive and exemplary damages, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit claims “Brooks acted with fraud, malice and oppression toward Colton, with the deliberate intention of causing Colton harm.”
If you were unaware, CM Punk and Colt Cabana just won a defamation lawsuit against the WWE (more specifically Chris Amann, the WWE’s Senior Ringside Physician) two months ago. The lawsuit lasted two years, and was over comments about mistreatment from Amann that Punk made on Cabana’s podcast, ‘The Art of Wrestling’.
Punk said multiple times in interviews regarding the case that his #1 priority was getting Cabana off scot-free (no pun intended), most recently when speaking with Ariel Helwani the day after the verdict was made. He said, and I quote…
“That was my main goal, you know? I walk through life and I try to shield the ones I love, and he was, you know…I felt the whole thing was frivolous, but like, to me, I was like ‘Leave this guy alone’. You know? But like, whatever.”
So the fact that he’s now leaving his ex-friend out to dry, and out to pay $513,736 in legal fees, seems waaaaaaay shitty.
If this is all true, and obviously that’s a big IF, I assume this’ll be an easy win for Cabana. Or maybe not a “win” for Cabana, per-say, because I can’t see any scenario in which this DOESN’T get settled out of court. Who knows, though. Best friend split-ups are always messy and get all he-said she-said-y ESPECIALLY when there’s big money like this on the line.
