Vince Carter Does Not Have To Retire!
Oh hell yes! Maybe it’s just me, but I was not ready to say goodbye to Vince Carter. I am a self admitted sucker for these guys that have hung around for 20ish+ years. I want guys like Manu (17 years), Dirk (21 years), and Vince (21 years) to play forever, simply as a basketball fan. What’s crazy is that each of these old timers are still somewhat productive. It shouldn’t make sense, but I wouldn’t exactly call any of those three guys washed just yet. We know Dirk is signing on for one more, there are rumors Ginobili is going to give it one more shot, and now we have Vince officially good to go for the 2018-19 season.
Part of me got a little nervous when I heard Vince Carter do Summer League broadcasts because he sounded so damn good. A natural behind the mic. I figured that career path probably looked more appealing than riding the bench for a noncontender or something like that. Boy am I glad I was wrong. One of the most polarizing players of my generation is refusing to hang it up and I find that awesome. It’s also the shock of the century that he didn’t wind up in GS like everyone else, instead choosing to be a locker room presence for a young Hawks team instead of securing that one missing piece to his HOF career (talkin’ ringzz).
So can he still play? Well I guess it depends on what your expectations are. He played 17 minutes a night last year for SAC averaging 5 points a night on 40/34% splits with 1.0 3PM a night. For a normal player I’d say no this dude can’t play. For a guy in his 40s that’s good enough for me. What I also love any time we see a player this old stay around is the bizarre facts that come with it. Stuff like this
If Carter is able to replicate the scoring he had last year (313 points) he would move to 26th all time and just 12 points behind Jerry West for 25th all time. That’s pretty cool. Anyway, I’m just glad we don’t have to say goodbye just yet, and seeing as how the Hawks are for sure going to get their asses blown out pretty frequently, hopefully he actually gets some burn.
