Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies For The Second Half Of 2018
The year may be halfway over for movies, but some huge releases are still to come. Yesterday we chronicled our picks for 10 Top Movies of 2018 (So Far) and today we will take a look at the films we are most anticipating for the remainder of the year. As always, you, the audience, had a say in voting for your own list. Make sure to rate all 2018 movies as you see them in the links at the bottom of this post. Let’s get to number ten…
Jeff – ‘Halloween’ (October 19th): Putting this movie on my list has to do more with intrigue than excitement, because I wouldn’t consider myself a huge ‘Halloween’ fan. (Jared Carrabis is a huge fan and will join our podcast to review the movie in October). Danny McBride penning this movie is the big draw here as he has a chance to join Jordan Peele and John Krasinski as comedians turned successful horror/thriller creators. This is also the third Blumhouse movie on my list. They’re taking over the film industry.
SIDE NOTE: Can I add how fucking hilarious it is to me that they’re just wiping out all nine ‘Halloween’ movies made after the first one? This movie eliminates all of those from their various timelines. On top of that, the official sequel to ‘Halloween’ is now also just simply titled ‘Halloween’. Disastrous sequels always help give a good laugh.
KenJac – ‘White Boy Rick’ (September 14th): Look, it’s Matthew McConaughey with a mullet, dealing guns and drugs in the 80’s. How much more could you possibly want?
Audience – ‘Aquaman’ (December 21st)
Jeff – ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ (December 7th): While this isn’t exactly the type of source material I crave in my movies, it does have two massive things going for it that get me excited: Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan. Two of my favorite actresses in the same movie? Sign me up.
KenJac – ‘Aquaman’ (December 21st): James Wan (‘Saw’, ‘Furious 7’) is almost too perfect to direct the next installment in the dark as fuck DC universe. As much as we dog DC movies for being sub-par, at the end of the day we always want more good movies. I have higher hopes for this because I love Jason Momoa, and the supporting cast of Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park and Willem Dafoe lend tremendously to my anticipation for it.
Audience – ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ (December 14th)
Jeff – ‘A Star is Born’ (October 5th): The potential here is huge and I will get excited for any Bradley Cooper movie these days without much hesitation. Something in the back of my head still tells me to be cautiously optimistic, because I am not sure if the hype is so huge solely because of Lady Gaga’s involvement. But the trailer was pretty great and the moment Gaga belts out her first lyrics shows what is possible with this movie. Also, Dave Chappelle’s involvement shoots this movie right up the list.
KenJac – ‘Creed II’ (November 21st): ‘Creed’ blew away any expectation I had for it, and set the stage for Ryan Coogler to establish himself as one of the best up and coming directors in Hollywood. Him not being at the helm of this is concerning, but he is still an executive producer for director Steve Caple Jr. Caple Jr. is best known for 2016’s ‘The Land’ which I haven’t seen, but has pretty average reviews. Coogler and his co-writer also didn’t return for the screenplay, with Stallone himself and Cheo Hodari Coker (‘Ray Donovan’, ‘Luke Cage’) taking over. I have no idea how that will play out, but this trailer was awesome.

Audience – ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ (November 21st)
Jeff – ‘Creed II’ (November 21st): I will be honest here for a second, I am very concerned about this movie. Don’t get me wrong, I am super excited, and the trailer was badass, but there are a lot of variables at play that could make this a failure of a sequel. Going from Ryan Coogler to a newcomer in Steven Caple Jr. is not exactly a confidence booster. Caple Jr.’s visuals in his movie ‘The Land’ are excellent and the style seems to fit with what a ‘Creed’ sequel should be. I also hope that the son of Ivan Drago storyline, which is pretty intriguing, isn’t too forced. While excited for its release, I am still concerned we will drop off a bit from the fantastic first movie we got a few years ago.
KenJac – ‘Beautiful Boy’ (October 12th): It looks like the father-son counter to one of my favorite movies from last year ‘Lady Bird’ and I don’t hate that at all. Steve Carrell has quietly pulled off some amazing dramatic roles in the past few years, and Timothee Chalamet, while annoying in name, is an incredible actor. He somehow made watching a grown man eat his nut out of a peach enjoyable. This is director Felix Van Groeningen’s English language debut, with the adapted screenplay coming from Luke Davies (‘Lion’, ‘Candy’). It’s supposed to be a story of addiction through a father’s eyes, which is obviously way darker than ‘Lady Bird’. I could see this concept and cast easily winning an Oscar somewhere depending on the execution.
Audience – ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ (October 12th)
Jeff – ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ (October 12th): This October is going to be a wild year for movies with so many big-time casts, directors and writers releasing much-anticipated movies. ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ matches up with a lot of those well casted movies coming soon to theaters. The trailer is incredibly intriguing, as it sets up an unpredictable crime mystery thriller that takes place at a California hotel. Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Cailee Spaeny, Russell Crowe, Nick Offerman and Chris Hemsworth all lead the charge for this October release. My hot take for this movie: Dakota Johnson is going to get a lot of praise after she finally gets a chance to really break free from the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise.
KenJac – ‘BlacKkKlansman’ (August 10th): I would bet hard money that Spike Lee has turned in a banger with this movie based off the autobiographical book by real life cop Ron Stallworth. John David Washington and Adam Driver are a killer combo, and Topher Grace is weirdly perfect as David Duke. The trailer was phenomenal, and its Cannes reception is very positive, so I have high hopes.
Audience – ‘First Man’ (October 12th)
Jeff – ‘Widows’ (November 16th): I love a good heist movie. You could give me a heist movie, tell me it’s the worst movie of all time and I am still going to sit down and watch it immediately. The plot description of “four armed robbers are killed in a failed heist attempt, only to have their widows step up to finish the job” tells me this is going to be an intense heist thriller. I also trust Steve McQueen, Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Liam Neeson, Daniel Kaluuya, Colin Farrell, Jon Bernthal and Robert Duval.
KenJac – ‘A Star is Born’ (October 5th): Bradley Cooper has a crazy wide range of acting in some very intense and Oscar-worthy winning movies, so I have a lot of faith in his directorial debut. Lady Gaga is one of the more talented singers of this generation and based off of what we heard in the trailer she’s pulling out all the stops. Dave Chappelle looks to be playing Bradley Cooper’s friend and I can’t wait to see him get back into the swing of Hollywood.
Audience – ‘The Predator’ (September 14th)
Jeff – ‘BlacKkKlansman’ (August 10th): This movie has garnered some huge hype and has been called a virtual lock to get a Best Picture nomination at the 2019 Oscars. Its great trailer has ramped up my excitement for the movie, along with a slew of great reviews already released. The wildest thing about this movie? It’s a Blumhouse production! The same studio that brought you ‘Truth or Dare’ and ‘The Purge’ also delivers ‘Get Out’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman’, what a world.
KenJac – ‘Widows’ (November 16th): This is an absolutely insane cast with Liam Neeson, Viola Davis, Colin Ferrell, John Bernthal, Michelle Rodriguez, Daniel Kalyuua, and Robert Duvall. It looks like it has a sort of ‘The Town’ feel to it, except maybe a little darker. Plus, it’s directed by Steve McQueen (‘12 Years A Slave’), and co-written by Gillian Flynn (‘Gone Girl’) which is huge for a movie of this feel.
Audience – ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ (July 27th)
Jeff – ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ (July 27th): Keeping this short and sweet by saying that the new ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies have all been awesome and dropping the mic with this Henry Cavill bathroom fight fist loading clip.
KenJac – ‘Bad Times at The El Royale’ (October 12th): A stellar cast and a great writer/director headline what should be an outstanding mystery-crime thriller. For those of you that have played ‘Fallout: New Vegas’, I get major vibes from that and a touch of ‘The Usual Suspects’. Chris Hemsworth as a cult leader, Jeff Bridges as a robber, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Nick Offerman and Russell Crowe? Inject all of this right into my veins.
Audience – ‘Creed II’ (November 21st)
Jeff – ‘Backseat’ (December 14th): Adam McKay might be the Michael Jordan of Hollywood, and this isn’t me making a joke. McKay has written and directed: ‘Anchorman’, ‘Talladega Nights’, ‘Step Brothers’, ‘The Other Guys’ and ‘The Big Short’. Are you fucking kidding me with that list? His next project is ‘Backseat’, a biographical drama, which is sure to have some wit, about Dick Cheney. The cast is possibly the best out of any 2018 movie with Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsefeld, Bill Pulman as Nelson Rockefeller, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush and Tyler Perry as Colin Powell. I have no doubts that ‘Backseat’ will be one of 2018’s best movies. I also can’t move on without mentioning that Christian Bale gained a ton of weight for this role.
KenJac – ‘First Man’ (October 12th): The GosGod and Damien Chazelle reuniting to tell the story of one of the most significant events in human history is really hard not to put at #1. This has a stellar cast including Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Jason Clarke, Ciarán Hinds and Pablo Schriber. We get a quick glimpse at some events leading up to the launch, including the Apollo 1 disaster, where three Astronauts were incinerated during a test. I have huge hopes for Gosling here, and even more for Corey Stoll as Buzz Aldrin because people never talk about the heroes that cum second.
Audience – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (October 5th)
Jeff – ‘First Man’ (October 12th): I can say with 100% confidence that I am more excited for this movie than anyone else in the world (okay, Trillballins may be tied with me). I would bet everything in my checking account that this movie is going to win multiple Oscars. First off, you have the GosGod himself, Ryan Gosling, in the lead role as Neil Armstrong. Second, you have Damien Chazelle (‘La La Land’ and ‘Whiplash) going for his third dynamite movie in a row with what is being called a biopic space thriller. Toss in Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke and more and oh man… this movie is going to be fucking insane.
KenJac – ‘Mission Impossible’ (July 27th): The Bussy man Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, and best of all mustachioed Henry Cavill. I’ve said it a thousand times, that fist cock in the bathroom fight is already the best scene in cinema history. Will this be the best movie to come out for the rest of the year? Probably not, but it’s the one I’m most looking forward to and that’s the title of the damn blog.
Audience – ‘Venom’ (October 5th)
