PGA TOUR Makes Huge Schedule Changes (cuts down TPC Boston event)

Screen Shot 2018-07-10 at 4.50.40 PM

The PGA TOUR schedule has long been a complicated point of contention. Something’s always wrong. It either wraps around in a dumb way or it cuts into the start of football season or places events at shitty venues or snubs places that shouldn’t be snubbed. Most week’s it’s solid, but there’s always something wrong so they’re constantly tweaking it and today we got the most recent tweak.

Here are the bullet points.

- The PGA Championship moves from August to May (we knew this)

– The PLAYERS Championship moves from May to March (we knew this)

– FedEx Cup cut from 4 events down to 3

– Elimination of the annual TPC Boston event (will join the existing rotation of NYC-area Northern Trust stops)

– Adding Detroit and Minnesota events

Some thoughts from me.

One, The PLAYERS in March will be fantastic. Tournament always has a bit of a major championship feel and now we don’t have to go from the Ryder Cup all the way to April to feel like we’ve got a big event.

Two, the PGA at Bethpage in May is going to be dicey. There was barely grass there in May this year. It was an extended winter but still. No guarantees there and it will be a VERY difference experience from the scorching hot mid-Augusta PGAs we’ve come to know.

Three, big fan of the Minnesota and Detroit events. I like those places.

Four, no TPC Boston event every year sucks. I love that event. And as much as I’m not a Boston sports fan, I do love Boston. It is the center of the beginning of America and having the PGA TOUR swing by every Labor Day is a staple. It’s a real shame and a real miss by the TOUR that Boston will no longer have that.

Bummer.
