Cubs Fan Says He Was Beaten Up In The Cell Parking Lot After A White Sox-Tigers Game Because He Was Wearing A White Sox Shirt And Cubs Hat
(Source) A 28-year-old Cubs fan alleges he nearly lost his eyesight after he was attacked and beaten in a parking lot outside U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. Steven Rebenda was leaving the White Sox-Tigers game last Wednesday — his first time at the White Sox’s home field — when three young fans began jeering at him over his choice of jersey. “I had a White Sox shirt on and a Cubs hat,” Rebenda said. “I mean, I’m a Cubs fan, but I wasn’t going to go all in Cubs gear. I know better than that.”
But in spite of the shirt, the group’s heckling over his outfit intensified, Rebenda said. “They kind of surrounded me in a little triangle and were running their mouths,” he said. “I noticed one guy down here playing with his hand a little bit.” “Next thing I know I get sucker punched in the face,” he said. Rebenda suffered a detached pupil, a fractured globe and six stitches to his left eye. He says he wants to bring it to the public’s attention to ensure the safety of every fan — not just the visiting team’s.
“I just don’t want this to happen to anybody else,” he explained. “I think this is ridiculous. Everybody is trying to make this about, ‘Oh he’s just a Cubs fan trying to get PR.’ This isn’t about the Cubs. Or the Sox. This just shouldn’t have happened in the first place.” A White Sox spokesman said the club has reached out to Rebenda’s family and Chicago police to gather more information about the incident while maintaining that public safety at the ballpark is a top priority.
Now I’m not going to go as far as to say that Steven Rebenda deserved to get beaten up, sucker punched, and almost lose his eyesight. No one deserves that. But come on man. A Cubs hat and White Sox Jersey? What the fuck is that. That gets no sympathy from any rational sports fan. You’re asking for trouble, you’re asking to have people make fun of you and call you a pussy. Don’t tell me you’re a Cubs fan then wear a White Sox shirt, no real fan of either side wears the opposing teams colors. And don’t tell me it’s to feel safe either. People wear Cubs shit at the Cell all the time, same with White Sox gear at Wrigley. Fuck I’m pretty sure Ronnie Woo-Woo has an office on the South Side. As long as you’re not an asshole no one is going to do anything. Maybe some ball busting but nothing serious. But the mix of Sox and Cubs, that’s crazy. So no you didn’t deserve to get beaten up but if we’re being honest you sort of did.
