I hate Kevin Garnett with the force of at least 2-3 Carlos Boozers right now. Boozer was essentially harmless. Whines about the same calls/noncalls KG does, carries himself with the same amount of hideous bravado, and barks at opponents just as much. The only difference is Carlos Boozer is a hasbeen scrub and Kevin Garnett is a future Hall of Famer standing in the way of my scrappy underdog team’s shot at a conference Final. So, naturally, KG is the ire drawer du jour.
Which is why it’s weird that I found myself surprisingly unoffended by his comments calling Sixers fans “fairweather”. Every fiber in my being wants to take this comment and turn it into some weird fan version of locker room material to further fuel my hatred for that Big Ticket asshole, but in doing so I would be lying to myself. Garnett is right. Sixers fans are fairweather fans.
The 76ers have been at the bottom of the Philly sports heap for about a decade now. The order is this: Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, then Sixers — with the Birds and the Phils fluidly moving between 1 and 2 depending on their success / time of year. But the constant in the city’s recent history is the Sixers pulling up the rear. I imagine the order for Boston fans is a bit different, and gotta believe that the Celtics are more popular than the Bruins, and may even contend for a #2 spot in their city’s heart. So in that respect, yeah, I guess Celtics fans are more emotionally involved than Sixers fans.
But him being right here doesn’t change fact that he’s an asshole, that he’s the beneficiary of horrendous officiating and favoritism, and that he has NO IDEA what Celtics fans were like before the “Big 3″ arrived. Remember that time in Boston when the Celtics were 24-58 and last place in the East? Those lean times were rough, eh KG? Oh, that’s right — you weren’t there.
It’s real easy to stay plugged into your team when the squad is contending for a championship every year. If the Celtics weren’t one of the better teams in the league for a large part of the decade there’s no way KG could even make this claim. The Garden Jr. wouldn’t be so sold out if it was just Marquis Daniels and Greg Stiemsma running the show for a guaranteed first round out.
So yeah, Kevin, maybe Philly fans haven’t been on the Sixers bandwagon for long. But you’re lying to yourself if you don’t think Boston fans (or ANY fans) wouldn’t react the same exact way to a team headlined by Andre Iguodala for the majority of the decade. You’ve proved nothing, asshole.
Game’s Wednesday, right? Where are my batteries?
