Oh Your State Just Legalized Marijuana? Not If Barack O-Buzzkill Has Anything To Say About It

Yahoo – Votes making Colorado and Washington the first U.S. states to legalize marijuana for recreational use could be short-lived victories for pot backers because the federal government will fight them, two former U.S. drug control officials said on Wednesday. They said the federal government could sue to block parts of the measures or send threatening letters to marijuana shops, followed up by street-level clampdowns similar to those targeting medical marijuana dispensaries the government suspects are fronts for drug traffickers. “This is a symbolic victory for (legalization) advocates, but it will be short-lived,” Kevin Sabet, a former adviser to the Obama administration’s drug czar, told reporters. “They are facing an uphill battle with implementing this, in the face of … presidential opposition and in the face of federal enforcement opposition,” Sabet said.

And that’s the sound of Colorado and Washington state stoner liberals getting hit in the face with political reality. Obama seems cool, sure, but never forget he’s still a politician who will say whatever for votes then do whatever he wants after. Barry’s not cool with weed sales in America, and just like he did in his last term by getting the Feds to shut down dispensaries and block legalization, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep people from being able to buy Kush over the counter.

It is important to note though, that while the Federal Government has the power to bring in officials to stop the sale and production of marijuana, they cannot enforce any laws on an individual basis:

Ian Millhiser, senior constitutional policy analyst with the left-leaning Center for American Progress, said the federal government, even if it sues to challenge the Colorado and Washington initiatives, cannot force police in those states to arrest people for marijuana infractions.

So at least you won’t get maced by the FBI for buying it legally, but you can bet the owner of any CO or WA weed store will have Obama’s goons in his ass so fast he’ll swear he voted for free prostate exams.

Sorry hipsters, Barry Obams is only cool with weed if it’s the 70′s and it’s him smoking it. But hey, at least cigarettes are legal!

its literally ridiculous that weed is still illegal. not only does everyone smoke pot, but it doesnt kill you unlike alcohol and cigs. not to mention the $ the govt could make from selling it. what a fucking joke

So lemme get this straight...you're basing your analysis of the situation on 1. People who no longer advise Obama. 2. People who no longer run any sort of drug enforcement agency and 3. On the idea that a man who will never agin run for office is still concerned with what will get him reelected. Oh carry on then.

agreed nat, there are probably a lot of educated smokers who'd rather pay 40% more for their drugs if the taxation went into our government rather than all the money ending up in burnouts and mexican hands when all is said and done.Now about the Obama not being cool with pot, he never said anything about being lenient with it, so he's not misrepresenting himself, and if Romney won he'd already be shutting down these legalization efforts. I think Obama is the most lenient guy we've had in that seat, other than slick willie

Obama doesn't want ANY power taken away from the Federal government, Eric Holder will sue Washington and Colorado just like he sued Arizona over immigration...Obama doesn't believe that the states should be able to circumvent federal law on anything...this is just a fundamental principal of big government liberals...the states should be weak and Washington should have all the power...Holder's stance on this should be no surprise to anyone paying attention

You really want this country to get its ass kicked by China? Legalize weed. We'd be a third rate economy in 20 years. Let the govt. look the other way while responsible adults smoke discreetly. Making it available to the masses via over the counter distribution is a recipe for disaster.

some nerd...it's not political analysis you dope...it's political basics...it's not open to opinion...and how is anything I said conceded?? If you were paying attention you saw how Eric Holder reacted when states tried to circumvent federal law with immigration...he didn't go after these states because he thought the laws were unjust (they were the exact same laws on the Federal books) he went after Arizona because they were taking away power from the Feds, that's it...his job is to keep power at the Federal level, so when Colorado and Washington basically say that they are going to ignore federal law and write their own marijuana laws that is another shot at the Obama administrations basic belief in a strong central government and weak individual states...now I'm not offering an opinion as to whether this is right or wrong, it's just a fucking fact...Obama wants power at the federal level, he has appointed an Attorney General to make sure that states do not take any power away from Washington, enforcing marijuana laws is a FEDERAL obligation, Colorado and Washington said "not any longer" that is not something Obama wants because if he lets that slide then it sets a precedent where more states can thumb their nose at Washington

it's all a formality. i've been blowing back on the daily for like 15 years. legalization would be nice, but we're decriminalized in Mass as long as it's under an ounce, i can live with that. nothing changes on my end.
