CBS – Tyrann Mathieu is at a Houston drug rehab treatment center, a source close to Mathieu confirmed to CBSSports.com Friday morning. FOX8 in Louisiana was the first to report the news that the LSU star will remain at the Right Step recovery center in Houston run by former NBA player John Lucas, instead of returning to classes at LSU or any other college to play football this fall. Lucas reached out to Mathieu after last Friday’s press conference at LSU by coach Les Miles announcing the Tiger standout’s departure from the program. Mathieu, according to the source, flew to Houston on Sunday. “They have the finest of everything there,” the source said of the Houston rehab center. “Tyrann realizes he has to resolve his issue. The desire is for him to get his life right, to get his life together. He needed counseling. He needed help. If he went somewhere else just to go play football, his problems would resurface. He understood that ‘The Honey Badger persona’ couldn’t last living that life. “This is really about this child’s life. Football’s not the important thing right now. That’s the easy part for him.” The source said Mathieu’s issue was with marijuana, not any other drug. There was also fear among those close to Mathieu that he might move on to heavier drugs.
Over marijuana? MARIJUANA? C’mon now, America, it’s time to get your priorities straight.
I’ll give you that the synthetic stuff is a different monster than traditional weed, but I just can’t find it in my heart or brain to take this rehab stint seriously. He’s only in rehab because he needs to impress the right people, not for his personal health. Honey Badger could literally smoke weed every second of the day and he would live a long (but probably very dumb) life. It’s not a health issue.
Not trying to get on my soapbox and start spouting off about the twisted way in which we look at drugs in this country, but when half of baseball is doping and the nation is being overrun with an addiction to prescription medication, it’s a little hard to take dude’s weed “problem” seriously. How many high school and college kids do you think get addicted to Adderall each year? How many stay-at-home moms spend large parts of their day popping painkillers to numb the boredom? How many families do drugs like Oxycontin, Vicodin, Valium, Xanax, Ambien, Lunesta, and Codeine completely destroy? And here we are as a society throwing a college-aged football player in rehab because he smokes weed. Incredible.
The government and pharmaceutical companies make way too much money off of those prescription drugs to try to stop America’s sick and rapid consumption of them, and only half-heartedly make efforts to quell their spread. Prescription drugs kill 100,000 people a year, and we’re supposed to keep a straight face when people say “This is really about this child’s life” concerning Honey Badger in weed rehab? Fuck outta here.
Unless someone’s habit is freakishly Snoop Lion-like out of hand, marijuana is not something we should be spotlighting as a reason to go to rehab. There are probably tens of thousands of students in colleges around the country snorting blue and orange dust to study for tests who are closer to needing rehab than this guy. He went to appease the people who will eventually sign his checks. Does weed enhance his performance or endanger his health? No. But rules are rules, aren’t they? And if Tyrann wants any fatcat owner to sign over big NFL checks, he’s going to have to be a good little boy and do whatever they say.
