Turns out that the ghost of Joe Banner lives on inside the Novacare Complex, somehow granting the Eagles permission to sign a bunch of expensive jackass players and still be at or near the top of the league in available cap space. Even further, it appears the Eagles will have additional cap space added to their total after they cut a few underperforming and overpaid guys this offseason (Vick, Babin, Nnamdi, etc). So with a roster still relatively rounded out with talent and a pocket filled with NFL dollars — what does the team do with that money?
Looking at the list of 2013 Free Agents is like throwing icewater on your Dream Team II boner. Not much to work with. Unless you’re delusional and want the Eagles to send a bunch of money to Dwayne Bowe or someone equally ridiculous, there aren’t many useful places for the Birds to upgrade through Free Agency. Jason Peters and Todd Herremans will be back. Maybe they sign a corner or a few offensive guards, but beyond the obvious there aren’t any Peyton Manning-level gamechangers on the market next summer.
Perhaps they simply stockpile picks, hold onto their money, and wait to pounce next offseason. Maybe they make a strong push at Joe Flacco, trying to get him to play for his hometown Birds instead. Maybe they do nothing. Regardless of their decisions, right now one thing is for sure: talking about the future is way more fun than talking about the present.
