Waste Some Valuable Time And Watch The Original, Short Film Of "Whiplash"

GREAT movie. JK Simmons is awesomely dick. Sucks to be the real life drumming actor, though. He’s the only guy in the short film that wasn’t in the full production. Even Moby Dick made the cut. Poor drummer got the shit slapped out of him only to get replaced by better talent. Wait, that’s actually perfect symbolism for the entire movie. Touche.

Music directors have the shortest fuses known to man. Most have such perfectionist mindsets where belittling and super spaz sessions come with the territory. Little known fact about Smitty – I played the drums from a youngin through high school and was in every musical group possible minus the marching band. Big band, jazz band, even a middle school alternative rock group called Faded Dharma because we were a fucking middle school alternative rock group. We were all set for our big gig headlining the 8th Grade Dinner Dance but our lead singer was caught that day shuffling coke at the classroom. Come to think of it, I’m the only person in Faded Dharma that didn’t end up doing serious jail time. Regardless, we’d still crush an encore of Dammit on the spot. Bitches were left drowning all over the gym and/or YMCA social floor back in the hey day.

Also, Buddy Rich is truly the GOAT. He was also a gigantic dick (Parts of Simmons’ character were obviously based off the legendary drummer). Rich was just an angrier, less anti-semantic Mel Gibson before his time.
