Yahoo – The Jets continue to try to find new ways to use backup quarterback Tim Tebow, either despite or because everything else they’ve tried with him has failed. Tebow’s only real success so far this season came on the gorgeously thrown textbook pass he made toNick Bellore on a fake punt this past Sunday (see video above). Aside from that, the Tebow in New York experiment has been pretty much a bust. He’s only attempted three passes, and on 18 rushing attempts is averaging just 3.6 yards a carry, despite one of those attempts going for 22 yards. But he can always expand his horizons. Up next: Running back. And why not? The young man still doesn’t have a handle on the position he practiced for four years in college, so why not assume he can play a different position at an NFL level immediately? Head coach Rex Ryan talked about Tebow the running back on Thursday. ”That’s a possibility,” Ryan said. “The thing about Tim, with him being a football player like we’ve always talked about, by playing quarterback he knows all the positions and so, can you plug him in at running back? Can you plug him in at tight end, whatever? I think the answer is yes.”

The answer is “no” Rex. Look I respect what Rex and Sparano are trying to do. This is a team bereft of talent that has experienced injuries the past few weeks to make their situation even more bleak. So when that happens you gotta get creative. You gotta look outside the organization and inside the organization – inside the playbook and outside the playbook. Gotta do what you can to milk every ounce of performance out of the remaining talented players you got. Thats why theres always talk of Cromartie as a WR and McKnight as a CB and now Tebow as a RB. Rex and Sparano are trying to earn their paycheck by leaving no stone unturned. I appreciate that sort of dedication to winning.

But, a lot like Girardi and his lineup with the ALCS, sometimes there’s just no moves to make. At least, no moves that make you a better team. Girardi juggled the batting order. He benched players, DH’d others. Pinch hit it one or 2 big spots every game. Tried every combination of his players possible. Problem was, none of his players were any good. Either they just weren’t good in general or were slumping at the time. In a way thats whats going on with Rex and company. Willing to try just about anything – I just don’t know if any of those options are good enough to make a difference with this time.

Bottom line is the Jets need to play like they did last week – with the players that performed last week – in order to have a chance to beat New England at home. Sanchez needs to eliminate turnovers. The run needs to be established by Shonn Greene.  The D needs to be held down by guys like Cro and Coples duplicating last week. I know the Pats are very different from the Colts. But trying the juggle in a guy like Tebow after the team’s best performance of the year ain’t gonna be the answer.
