So in honor of Nick Swisher’s 200th home run in last night’s game, which happened to be a go-ahead grand slam, I’ve decided to settle a debate 4 years in the making. Since his arrival in 2009, Swisher has attacked the big city spotlight with an incessant “Whatup Bruh!” mentality. The frat boy personality that the right fielder brings to the camera has polarized NY fans into two groups: those who love and believe the shtick, and those who don’t. Now, I don’t like to name drop, but back in 2009, I met Brian Bruney at a local dog park. That’s B-R-U-N-E-Y. Aside from the fact that he was kinda the biggest tool I’ve ever met, he did give me his honest opinion when I asked about the then-recent acquisition of Swisher. His response was something along the lines of, “He’s alright, kind of annoying. And most of the time in the clubhouse, it’s just like, ‘Shutup, Swish.’”
I really hope I don’t get scolded by Barstool’s nonexistent HR department in the nonexistent company newsletter for quoting a public figure based solely on memory, but I think I’ll be okay. Regardless, the bottom line is this. Some of you feel that his act is nothing more than that: a mere performance hiding his true colors. But then there are those who believe in the goodness of life and the purity of people. Personally, I hope he’s the same guy in and out of the spotlight because that’s a rare, but welcomed sight with celebrities. However, I can’t help but feel that Bruney may not have been that far off base, and most of the guys in the clubhouse react to his antics more like this:
You decide… 1 for I truly believe that Nick is as Swish-i-licious in real life as he is on camera OR 10 for It’s all just a show.
