Season 5 of Breaking Bad has started pretty slow. Not slow in a bad way. Just different from the end of season 4 frenzy that was like the ending of an action movie every single week. There hasn’t been poison or explosions this season yet, but the first few episodes are doing what Vince Gilligan and Breaking Bad does best – its building the plot, its building the tension, and slowly developing characters. Its not the type of show thats gonna come in guns blazing to start a premiere and blow its load in the first couple hours. It started with a flash forward 1 year into the future. From here on out we’ll be building up to that moment when Walt is 52 years old with an AK-47 in his trunk seemingly down to his last gun in the bullet.
Theres a lot to talk about so far in season 5. The emergence of Mike. Jesse going back to being a bitch rather than his bad ass version of himself. Who the fuck is Lydia and why is she such a mess? How on earth could this antsy disaster been a part of the Pollos Hermanos scheme from the beginning? But the biggest thing so far has just been the obvious transformation of Walt into Heisenberg. Every episode he’s faded more and more to the dark side. He gets creepier and meaner every week. Every week closes with him going to bed with his wife who’s absolutely terrified of him as he fades more and more into his alter ego. A few more episodes and he’ll officially have gone Full Heisenberg.
Creator Vince Gilligan has said “Walter is going to do something unforgivable this season” to the point that you can no longer side with him. Even through this episode last night with Skyler, I still find myself on his side. He could probably murder someone in my family and I’d still be like “He’s just trying to do whats best for him and his loved ones!” Its gonna take a lot for me to turn on Walter White. But I can’t wait to see what it is that finally makes me do it.
