Daily Evergreen- A WSU football player was taken to the hospital after a party turned sour, allegedly ending in a fight involving the University of Idaho and WSU football teams at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning. According to officers on scene, Mansel Simmons, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver, was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital then transported to Spokane after someone allegedly punched him in the face at a party near the corner of Ash and Maple streets, according to Pullman police. The suspect allegedly pulled a knife prior to punching him. Police believe the suspect is either a member of the UI or WSU football team. In a related incident, someone allegedly smashed the car of UI senior wide receiver Kyren Watts’ girlfriend. Watts had been using the car that night. According to Pullman police, members of that party broke the rearview mirror and window of the car. Trash lay strewn around the car, apparently thrown from it during the incident. It is uncertain whether members of the football teams damaged the car. Sgt. Dan Dornes with Pullman police said they have identified several people involved in the altercation, but the department cannot confirm to what extent they were involved. WSU athletics spokesman Bill Stevens said the football team will deal with the matter internally.
I had to look it up, but apparently WSU and Idaho are technically rivals. and as bad as it sounds it’s kind of refreshing to hear about something like this happening. In the modern world of college football where staring at a player for too long after a play will get you 15 yards and two teams jumping around at midfield yelling at each other is considered an altercation, you have to admit this is actually kind of a nice change of pace for college football. I’m not saying that it’s necessarily a good thing that someone pulled out a knife and another kid got sent to the hospital, and I know this fight was probably due less to people on each football team being strongly dedicated to their school’s tradition and more to to a bunch of intoxicated bros who interpret someone accidentally bumping into them as a sign of disrespect But that doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to convince myself it’s bigger than that. The schools will probably try and sweep this under the rug and it’s a real shame because this would make a fantastic story line building up to their match up next year. I want Idaho! I want Idaho! This September, the city of Pullman, Martin Stadium! WSU-Idaho! It’s the Smackdown in the Pac-12!
