Megyn Kelly's Interview With Alex Jones Was Beat By "America's Funniest Home Videos", Which Is Remarkably Still On The Air

CNN – Megyn Kelly’s much talked about interview with Alex Jones got plenty of attention for Kelly and NBC, both good and bad, but not many viewers.

Kelly’s sit down with Jones, a controversial, conspiracy theorist radio host and founder of the website Infowars, brought in an average of 3.5 million viewers Sunday night. That’s the fewest viewers that Kelly’s weekly news magazine telecast, “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly,” has drawn since its debut three weeks ago.

The show also trailed a re-run episode of CBS’ “60 Minutes,” which brought in 5.3 million viewers. Among 18-49-year-olds, the demographic most prized by advertisers, a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” beat both Kelly and “60 Minutes” by about 40%.

Two things going on here, and I’d like to discuss both:

1) There’s been so much hoopla about this interview. Advertisers pulling out. Many people mad online that Megyn Kelly is giving Alex Jones a platform. I mean, she interviewed Putin a couple weeks ago. Who cares that Megyn is interviewing Alex Jones? He’s a public figure, he’s controversial, and she’s a journalist. She isn’t here to tell you how to feel one way or the other, she’s here to ask the questions people want to know and let the viewer decide. I understand it’s sensitive because he has outrageous viewpoints about topics like 9/11 and Sandy Hook, but if you don’t realize he’s a fucking lunatic from 10 seconds of watching him, you’re already a fucking lunatic yourself.

2) America’s Funniest Home Videos is still on the air. That’s AMAZING. Home videos haven’t been a thing since about 2004, what with the creation of Facebook, Instagram, iPhones, Twitter, and the demise of the VCR. There are people who are watching AFHV who don’t know what a home video even is. Who have never seen a tape. But I guess somewhere, I have to assume the Alabama/Idaho/Montana type states, a woman is recording a man getting hit in the dick by a baseball, and sending the tape in. And yes, people still watch it, as it was just renewed for it’s 28th season. Unbelievable.

So at the end of the day, NBC lost advertisers, Megyn Kelly has a very bad public perception for doing this interview, and they lost in rating to 10 year old videos from morons in Kentucky. Maybe sometimes you get no juice from the squeeze.
