When I tell people what it sounds like when someone is shooting at you, I try to describe a loud snapping noise. You can hear that sound in this video.

That’s the reason Marines still pull their own targets in the pits. You need to be able to recognize what it sounds like when you are being shot at. In the movies, they always have the sounds that come from the actual weapon. When you are being shot at from a distance, you hear the snap first.
