Fort Hood - A 22-year-old Fort Hood, Texas, soldier was shot in the face and died after what prosecutors say was an attempt by a fellow soldier to cure the victim’s hiccups. Patrick Edward Myers, of Spartansburg, S.C., was charged with manslaughter in the case and remains in the Bell County Jail on $1 million bond, according to a news release from the Killeen, Texas, police.
Police say three men were inside a Killeen residence Sunday night watching a football game and drinking when one of the men produced a handgun, handled it in an “unsafe manner,” and shot the victim in the face. An arrest affidavit obtained by the Associated Press said Myers apparently pointed a gun at the victim’s head to scare him and stop the hiccups. Myers allegedly thought the gun had dummy rounds when it discharged.
Tough way to go out for this kid. The only thing I can think of that’s worse than getting stuck with the hiccups is getting shot in the face by your buddy trying to help you get rid of them. It’s like when you’re super stressed because you’re running late for work and then to top it off you realize you can’t find your keys. It’s the double whammy to end all double whammy’s. But even so, in a way I kind of feel worse for the guy who shot him. Just one of those awful situations where you try to be a good samaritan and help out your fellow man and next thing you know you’re getting charged with manslaughter because you forgot to take the dummy rounds out of your pistol before pointing it at the person your trying to help’s face. Just your classic “everything that could go wrong did go wrong” scenario.
