Thome has rejoined the Chicago White Sox as a special assistant to general manager Rick Hahn, the team announced Tuesday.
“Before he left we had a sort of handshake agreement that at some point when he was done playing he was going to come back,” White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said. “Whether he was going to come back was never an issue, it just was a matter of when.”
Thome, who will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2018, was happy to hear from Reinsdorf when he called two weeks ago.
Though his time on the South Side was somewhat shortlived and even though he wasn’t a member of the 2005 World Series team, Jim Thome will always go down as a fan favorite for Sox fans. The bomb he hit in the “Blackout Game” has already gone down in White Sox lore as one of the most important home runs in team history.
But besides that, by all accounts he’s a great baseball mind and is regarded as someone who could potentially manage in the Big Leagues one day. You can’t have too many of those types of people within your organization. I love when the Sox keep former stars within their organization like they have with Big Frank and Carlton Fisk as Ambassadors and now Thome as the GM’s special assistant. Now hopefully he can knock some sense into Rick and Kenny and have them either get rid of half this team.
Now onto more important things:
We have all of these new Cubs shirts in the Stool’s shirt store now and I’m sick and tired of it. Now it’s the Sox turn. Sure it’s been 8 seasons since the Sox have won the World Series and they have only had 10 winning seasons since 2000. I know that’s nothing to write home about, especially with the Cubs lighting the world on fire in the past century. Now I know everyone is gonna bitch and moan about how no one cares about the White Sox and yada yada yada. There’s a ton of Sox Stoolies out there and they deserve a shirt too. A Stoolie tweeted me this design, now I need to know what you guys think. Leave 1, 2 or 3 in the comment section.
Or just tell me I’m fat and should go fuck myself, that works too.
