DEERFIELD, Ill. — Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday that he spoke to center Joakim Noah about his decision to shoot a 3-pointer against the Orlando Magic just to try to win Big Macs for fans at the United Center. The Bulls have a promotion through which fans can get a free Big Mac if the Bulls score 100 points in a home win. The Bulls won 99-93 as Noah missed his 3 with 3.8 seconds left. “I talked to him about it, but I’m going to keep that private,” Thibodeau said after Wednesday’s practice.
It’s not the first time the promotion has made headlines. Kirk Hinrich was booed after a game despite leading the Bulls to victory, and even Derrick Rose said he felt bad after his missed free throws cost the fans a free burger. Noah made one of two free throws with 23 seconds left to make it 99-93, and Hinrich missed two with 10 seconds left. “I got caught up in the moment,” Noah admitted after the game. Despite the fact the Bulls had won, many fans booed the team as the final buzzer sounded. “I regret it a little bit,” Noah said. “It wasn’t a good shot. “You have to respect the game because you never know what can happen in a game. I just got caught up in the moment and I was trying to get the people a Big Mac. They really wanted a Big Mac (judging by how loud the crowd was getting) and I felt like, not only did I take the shot and miss the shot, we didn’t even get the Big Mac. Next time, I won’t take that 3-pointer.”
First of all I want to personally thank Joakim Noah. The free Big Mac give away is one of the greatest things that was ever created. Its like being at a Vegas Sportsbook and having every single person on the same side. Everyone wants a Free Big Mac. The players, the fans, Benny, those fat guys that come out and dance in between quarters, the jesse white tumblers when they do their halftime show, everyone. So thank you Joakim. I appreciate the effort. Obviously if the game was still in question it would be different but when the Bulls have cemented a victory I want the players to always try their best to get me a free Big Mac.
Now, the more important issue here. Coach Thibs. I love Thibodeau. Think he’s a top 5 coach in the league, and more importantly D-Rose loves Coach Thibodeau which is crucial to this team’s long term success. If your star listens and respects the coach, the whole team follows. But Thibs needs to learn to lighten up just a bit. I mean this is totally innocent. Noah was just looking out for the fans.
It ties into the greater, I’m going to coach every game like its the playoffs mindset that Thibs has. Little things like playing Deng 19 straight minutes in the opener to start the game even though the guy has half a wrist or reprimanding players who shoot for Big Macs. I worry that those things will eventually burn a team out and then no one listen, you know, exactly what happened to Scott Skiles (not that Skiles is as good as Thibs). Either way, I feel like this is one of those times you just let slide. So what if Noah took a three, its not like he thinks he’s a three point shooter. He’s barely a 10 foot shooter. Guy just wanted to give his fans a free Big Mac.
I can’t remember all the coupons in the coupon book off the top of my head but if I had to rank them it goes.
1. Dunkin Donuts Race – mainly because you never actually have to win this to get something for free. Just tell the Indian bro behind the counter that Biggie Bagel won and he’ll never know it was really Cuppie Coffee. Such a fool.
3,289. Hinckley’s Free Water – How fucking useless is this one? I wouldn’t take a free gallon of water if someone put it in my hand right this second. So weird. Who pays for water? Or gets gallon jugs of it? Water is free for everyone in the entire world. Idiots.
