Yahoo – An Australian daily newspaper has rebranded North and South Korea as “Naughty Korea” and “Nice Korea” in their standing medal count, drawing split social media responses with some on Twitter lauding the idea as comic genius and others insisting that it is tantamount to racism.
What’s the problem here? North Korea is naughty. Like super freaky naughty. And not in the cool, sexy way. In the “We got nuclear bombs, half our nation’s kids have stunted growth and we’ll sentence you to hard manual labor if you go 0-3 in the World Cup” way. Just naughty on every level. And to be honest it’s pretty hard to tell the difference anyway. When I worked as a teacher I had tons of Korean students. Threw me off guard whenever they told me they were from there. Could never remember if South Korea was naughty or nice. Started looking them up and down like Larry David trying to figure out if they were good or bad:
It would have been way easier for them to say, “I’m from Korea, the nice one.” Would’ve saved me a hassle and a half.
