CBS) DePaul senior forward Cleveland Melvin is no longer enrolled at the university, the team announced Monday. Melvin was leading the Blue Demons with 16.7 points per game. He’d previously been suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules and hadn’t played since Jan. 20. Melvin was also among DePaul’s all-time leaders in scoring, scoring average, rebounding, field goals, blocked shots and free throws. He played in 110 career games and was the 2011 Big East Rookie of the Year. DePaul is 10-14 and hosts 21-2 Villanova on Wednesday.
I don’t even know what to say about this program at this point. Last night Depaul’s leading scorer and best player, Cleveland Melvin, was kicked off the team/walked away out of nowhere. That’s the third guy this season alone that has been suspended either for a couple of games, Charles McKinney, or indefinitely, Jamee Crockett. They have a coach that was supposed to be a rebuilding guru, Oliver Purnell, who is currently on year 4 of a rebuild that has shown zero signs of progress. They play in a conference they can’t compete in (finished last 2 out of the last 3 years) in an arena no one wants to go to (All-State). It’s a complete and utter disaster. And even though I didn’t go to Depaul I still want them to do well. I want all Chicago area and Illinois teams to do well (even Northwestern, sometimes). But this is just flat out depressing. I’ve never seen a program become so fucking pathetic and rudderless. It’s an embarrassment and it really shouldn’t be this way. Depaul may not be a big name program anymore but Chicago is still one the best if not the best breeding grounds for basketball players. The fact that they can’t get anyone to play for this team is a joke. The fact that their leading scorer just left the team is a joke. It’s all a joke, and I can’t help but think it doesn’t have to be. Depaul should be good at basketball, yet they just can’t figure anything out.
