This NFL Films Tecmo Bowl Documentary Is Straight Fire

NFL Films – If you are between the ages of 25 and 45, chances are the first football video game you played was Nintendo’s Tecmo Bowl. It was Madden before Madden, a chance to play as your favorite team and players. Everyone I have told about this week’s episode of NFL Films Presents says two things: “Man, I loved that game” and “I was awesome at Tecmo Bowl”. Check out the feature, tune into NFL Films Presents, airing this week at the following times (all times Eastern):

10/22 at 12:30am — ESPN2

10/24 at 2:30 pm — ESPN2

10/26 at 4:30 pm — NFL Network

10/27 at 1:30pm — NFL Network

First things first. If you are between 25 and 45 the first football game you played was 10 yard fight not Tecmo Bowl. But I guess that’s just semantics since nobody would argue that Tecmo revolutionized video games forever and was arguably the most important video game of all time. In fact I still prefer Tecmo to any game ever invented with the possible exception of Baseball Stars or NHL 94. So naturally I couldn’t wait for this episode to air and watched the entire thing online which I NEVER do. I mean I generally can’t watch anything over 3 minutes on the internet. Not here though. I was glued to it from start to finish and already booked my plane ticket to Madison for next year to put a whoop ass on all these people. Because I know everybody always says they are the best at Tecmo but for real I was the best. I’ll just show up at this thing and wrap Mort into a cocoon of horror like you read about.

PS – As much hype as Bo Jackson always gets whenever you talk Tecmo Bowl nobody ever mentions that the Raiders overall weren’t that good. Just shows football is a team game. The 49ers were by far the best to the point we banned them. Everybody else was fair game.

Double PS – Can you get less respect than this documentary is getting with these play times? It aired for the first time last night at 12:30? Shit this should have been on all the networks instead of the debate.

Madden '94 Emmit Smith and the Cowboys were straight up silly. Run for like 500 yards and 14 TDs winning games 104 to 10.

My first game was (I think) titled Football for the Atari 2600. My next game was great.....titled 4th & Inches by ActiVision for the Commodore 64. Same company that produced the "Baseball!" game for the C64. If I recall, the special edition came with a 2nd floppy disk that allowed you to create your own team and input your own names for the players. So I made a team with a lot of my family and friends.....I remember my dad was the RB and I was one of the WRs. It was really cool for a pre-teen kid. Then, I discovered masturbation.

*nerd alert* There was actually an official Tecmo Super Bowl records web site, and I held two of the distinctions. 1) Least amount of rushing yards allowed during a season and 2) Most catches by 1 player in a game. I'm way more proud than embarrassed by that.

Glad to see Okoye get some credit. Bo gets all the love, but if Okoye was in "excellent" condition, he was the most unstoppable force in video game history. Problem is, he was terrible in "bad" condition. Bo could still be a game-changer in "bad."

it was all about the Bo Jackson/Marcus Allen tandem. I can deal with bum-ass Jay Schroeder at QB. And you were throwing to Todd Christiansen and Tim Brown. I made it work all day.NHL 94 was fuckin butt-cheeks though. 93 was way better. the most important aspect to a hockey game is the fights. in 93, there were unlimited fights and you could make a dude's head bleed and put him out for the game. 94's gameplay was drastically better, but there was no fighting, so that's an automatic DQ. i think i played 93 all the way up til 97 came out and they brought fighting back, albeit only one per game. but they had multi-game injuries, so you could at least shoot for that. and anyway, it's Blades of Steel all day. Countless fights, loser goes shorthanded. the way it should be.
