This Kony 2012 Nonsense Needs To Stop

I’m not about to say that the people sharing this video don’t have their heart in the right place, but knock it off. If you send me a YouTube longer than 3 minutes, I’m going to immediately close it. If you send me a YouTube that is 29 minutes, I’m going to raise my eyebrows at the audacity you have to think I’d watch it, then close it. Africa is a fucked up place, no doubt about that. Joseph Kony is a bad dude, for sure. But you’re not a world beater-because you clicked retweet or posted a video on Faceboook. Don’t act holier than thou, you’ve done nothing. If you want to go over and actually do good in Africa, be my guest. But you’re no better than anyone else for watching a video. No one in Africa is seeing this. It’s a viral video that will make Americans feel bad for a few minutes then go on their merry way. So quit sending me the fucking video. I’ve gotten the 50 thousand emails you guys sent to tips. Enough.

PS – Here and here are some articles explaining why the whole thing is a crock of shit. I’m sure some is exaggerated the same way the video is exaggerated, but it’s way more interesting if you ask me.

I kept seeing Kony 2012 on Facebook and thought it was some dude campaigning for political office. So what premise are we setting here? Everyone agrees someone like Kony deserves to die. The point the articles are making are that people should do more research about a cause, rather than just listening to a 30 minute video. The cause is just, but as described by the linked articles, the majority of the data they are citing is severely skewed. Before donating to any charity, do your homework. If Invisible Children is rated 2 stars as a charity group, and cites only .31 cents of every dollar going towards helping, that's not a great track record. Not to mention people in Iraq were beings slaughtered, raped, murdered by Sudam for the past 20 years, yet as soon as we went in, we are war mongers and Bush is the devil. The cause is essentially the same at the end of the day, and there are hundreds of dictators and warlords out there murdering and raping innocents. Do the people that are supporting this movement believe we should invade or pursue all of them?

Kony, don't assume that I'm against this or against taking guys like Kony out. I am simply saying, the majority of people that are posting this and supporting it,, the ones that now want us to go in and put the resources of our country behind this conflict, are probably almost all against us going into Iraq and other areas of the world where people are also being kidnapped, murdered, and raped everyday. It's just hypocritical and naive that people watch a heart touching video online, and are all of a sudden completely in support of our country becoming the world police and going in to protect people that can't protect themselves. Yet all we ever heard about Iraq was that it wasn't our job to police their country and protect them from Sudam, that was their problem. I like the premise of the video that you don't choose where you are born, so every child should have the same opportunity to succeed and have a life, but if that's the case, the US would be all over the world, including inside Mexico right over our borders, going in and taking out the corruption and murdering/raping that is going on there.

i was born in Zaire(now the DRC) and my family was fortunate enough to come here when i was 10 because of the war and such. It funny how these videos are goin viral right now when this stuff has been goin on for decades, and the crazy part is, most of the generals in these things are American trained (my uncle was in former president, hmm dictator, army and was trained in Kansas) although its sad that kids are involved but its rdiculous how naive people are. The reason you have so much unrest is because these countries offer a VAST amount of natural resources and every major world power has their hands on. America, China, Europe, you name it are the ones supplying these armies with weapons to keep the unrest while they are there just pillaging the country. This is classic. First off, I noted my job and title because it was assumed I'm some liberal activist with dreads. I'm a middle aged corporate director, very white, very republican. I'm not trolling sites - I visit BSS regularly even though just about everyone here has admitted its getting shitty, and I agree (theres still hope?). I decided to comment because I think the blog and comments were off base. If Invisible Child was asking for money (they accept money but were not asking) I'd be against it. Frankly, if they do ask for money and people want to give money and get a cheap shirt in return and thry get rich but in the end awareness does actually get raised and this guy gets caught, then who loses in that scenario? But they weren't asking for money or US troops. They're not asking for additional intervention. All they asked was, "please watch the video and share the video so more people will be aware and it'll be harder for our govt to ignore it and then forget about it." Thats it. You either watch the video or not. Nothing more. Beyond that, share it if you feel moved to do so. Some of you guys are acting like clicking on the link automatically turns you into Abbey Hoffman for crissake (proof I'm not 20). There is nothing you can do to reverse the current US involvement (its minimal). Choosing to ignore it or speak against it is your perogative, but still won't hurt it. And whats the logic in trying to end or reduce awareness anyway - it's not costing you time or money. In the end, there have been over 50 posts on a topic a bunch of you claim doesn't interest you. For that, I for one say thanks.
