Every Olympics has a defining moment. Some are victories, some are defeats. Some are just plain awkward like last night’s Women’s gymnastics. In case you didn’t watch it or aren’t familiar with the rules basically only two girls from the American team can qualify for the all around competition. So basically the US team competes as a team while simultaneously competing against each other which leads to tons of fake hugs, fake cheering and fake clapping. Yesterday the United States best gymnast Jordyn Wieber got edged out by Needham’s Aly Raisman in a huge upset. As Aly cried tears of joy for her dreams coming true her teammate Jordyn cried tears of sadness for her dreams being crushed. All while literally standing 2 feet from each other culminating with this interview on NBC which was the ultimate dagger for Wieber. Never has Jake Taylor’s advice of not celebrating in front of guys who just died ever been more appropriate. Just as awkward a scene as there can humanly be between two teammates, roommates and apparently arch enemies.
