(CNN) – Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who embodied a vanishing breed of liberal Republicanism before switching to the Democratic Party at the twilight of his political career, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, his family announced. Specter died of complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at his home in Philadelphia, his family said. He was 82. The veteran Pennsylvania politician had overcome numerous serious illnesses over the past two decades, including a brain tumor. He had been in the public eye since serving as a member of the Warren Commission, which investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Specter was elected to the Senate in 1980 and represented Pennsylvania for 30 years, longer than anyone in the state’s history.
I made a quick reference to this in the KJRs earlier, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t dedicate a whole blog to it. Ordinarily I think it’s bad karma to be glad when somebody croaks, but sometimes your karma needs to run over someone else’s dogma. And this is one of those times. Because there’s no reason to mourn a sleazy politician, a fraud and a grandstanding liar like Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Eagles). It couldn’t be more fitting that he was involved with the Warren Commission, the most bungled investigation in the history of the world. A group of incompetent misfits who took an obvious shooting by a creepy little loner and botched it so bad that most Americans think it was the CIA or the mob or aliens or something. (Don’t argue with me. The bullets came from Oswald’s gun. 98% of witnesses said there were 3 shots all coming from the book depository window and no one mentioned that fiction about the gunman on the Grassy Knoll until 9 years later. I can go all day on this topic.) So it’s only fitting that the guy who cut his teeth in Washington screwing an investigation beyond recognition would end his career carrying on a witch hunt directed at the Patriots. And that the good people of the great state of Pennsylvania were so humiliated they voted his sorry ass out of office and he died in obscurity.
Granted, I didn’t want to see Specter go this way. Real justice would’ve been Belichick riding into his bedroom on horseback and getting his revenge on the old fart’s skull with the business end of a ball & chain. But you take your victories where you can get them. @JerryThornton1
