(MNN) – Brendan Haas earned a prize any young kid would appreciate — an all-expenses paid trip to Disney World. Instead of going, though, the Massachusetts boy gave the vacation to the family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.
Just saw this and thought it was pretty cool. Seeing as it’s the first day I’ve felt 100% again since this weekend I figure it’s not too late to post stories about Memorial Day. I always try my best to remember that our soldiers overseas are our neighbors and friends but I can admit sometimes I read headlines and just pass over them. Almost like over a decade of war has desensitized us to it. Stories like this help remind me that every day, people close to home are affected. And that there are little kids like Brendan Haas doing his best to ease their suffering. All-around cool story.
PS – names of families from all over the country hoping to win and the kid from Kingston picks a Duxbury family? “It’s rigged! The fix is in!” yelled everyone on Twitter last night.
