NFL.com – Tom Brady’s 2010 regular season featured one of the prettiest stat lines in NFL history. .. So how did Brady follow up his MVP performance? In 2011, he set career highs in completions (611), attempts (401), yards (5,235), yards per attempt (8.6) and even rushing scores (3). He threw 39 touchdowns and became one of only four players in history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season. He nearly won the Super Bowl with a team that only had trace remnants of a defense or running game. And still, Brady lost hold on his No. 1 spot in NFL Network’s “The Top 100: Players of 2012″ list. He came in at No. 4, behind Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson and Drew Brees. This is patently absurd.
Amen! Preach on, brother! Testify! Look, I know that we’re in lowest point of the Death Valley of the NFL calendar, so NFL Net puts on this show to stir controversy and keep people talking football. And as much as I want to avoid getting snared in their little web, this is too much of a travesty to suffer quietly.
Tom Brady is only the 4th best player in league? Behind two other quarterbacks and a goddamned wide receiver? Taking nothing away from Rodgers, Brees and Johnson who are all swell. But are you fucking kidding me? Maybe you can lay out Rodgers’ and Brees’ stats and make them dance and convince yourself Brady was only the third best quarterback in 2011. Though you’d have to be blind to the fact that Brady’s only legitimate, experienced outside-the-numbers deep threat was a fucking moron who admits now he never had the slightest grasp of the offense. And that Brady did it all with two slot guys in their 30s and two tight ends. But at least you’d have the semblance of an argument. But how on God’s green Earth do you make a case that any wideout was better than him? Megatron is the best in the business, no doubt. But how can you say his 6.0 catches a game and his 110 more receiving yards than Wes Welker puts him ahead of the guy who took the ball every snap and carried the 31st ranked defense to the Super Bowl?
And the worst part is, this was voted on by NFL players, who obviously have had it up to their concussed brains with hearing how awesome Brady is and this is just the backlash. (Though it was pretty damned satisfying to hear Darrelle Revis call him “The best. The best ever. Just the best.”) I’ve always been a huge fan of democracy. Even while we elected terrible presidents, corrupt congressmen, lousy American Idol winners and gave the Best Picture Oscar to “Shakespeare in Love” over “Saving Private Ryan.” But this is the last straw. Well this and the fact that Jimmy Graham was 7 spots ahead of Gronk who had the best season by a tight end, ever. After this I’m convinced democracy has failed. No one should ever be allowed to vote for anything ever again. @JerryThornton1
