Steph Curry Will Make Pro Golf Debut This August At Web.com Tour Event

Here we go… cue the “OMG HE’S STEALING A MORE DESERVING PLAYER’S SPOT THIS IS SO EVIL” people.

These people are the worst. Steph Curry is receiving a sponsor’s exemption to play in this event. The event does not exist without the sponsors; they pay TONS of money with the intention of getting, in return, the attention and spotlight necessary to justify that spending. It’s a business. You know what businesses do to survive and thrive? Make good business decisions. You know what’s a good business decision? Landing one of the biggest superstar athletes on the planet to play in your event.

Oh, one golfer will now miss out on a sponsor’s exemption? One golfer who didn’t earn the spot in the event on his own? You’re crying for this person? Do you not understand how the world works?

If said golfer were better he’d be in the tourney already. He knows that. You know that. Everybody knows that. Steph getting in is net >>>> than just about anyone else getting in and that’s a fact.

So, how will he do? The precedent isn’t great. Jerry Rice famously shot a 92 in an equivalent event several years ago, then got DQ’d the next day for using a range finder (he had gone 83-76 to miss the cut in his pro debut a month prior).

These are Steph’s most recent scores.

(for context, the Ellie Mae winner last year finished 30-under)

But honestly, none of this matters. At all. He’s playing on behalf of the Warriors charity, he’ll have a blast competing as an avid golfer, and he’ll drive infinitely more money and eyeballs to the event than ever before. And he’ll provide plenty of “LOL look how bad Steph is, told you golf is hard” for all of golf twitter to gloat about. He could shoot even par and they’ll all hone in on one bad shot he hits. It’s the definition of a no brainer, for everyone. It’s all positives except for who, maybe one struggling pro who probably unceremoniously misses the cut anyways?

Grow up, people. This is a win/win/win.
