BostonHerald – Mikey and Jay’s humorous “sea monstah” video of their encounter with a huge sunfish turned the North Shore pals into viral celebrities and landed them on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, but their lives behind-the-scenes have been no laughing matter. I caught up with Michael D. Bergin Jr. yesterday at Malden District Court, a place where he’s no stranger. Bergin, or “Mikey” — as he’s known on a viral video that’s drawn millions of hits — said he was there to support his best friend, Jason “Jay” Foster, who was graduating from “drug court” rehab and celebrating with coffee, cake and his parents. Bergin, 41, has a lengthy criminal record that includes violence against women, throwing a phone at a 7-year-old girl, assault and battery convictions and two lifetime restraining orders brought by an ex-girlfriend and her mother. Bergin has spent time behind bars and has more than 20 criminal cases dating back to 1997 at Malden District Court alone. “My mother and I are quite disgusted that Mr. Bergin is getting all types of air time and financial endorsements and that there was no research done on his background prior to them airing and glorifying his verbiage — which was disgusting,” Melanie Philbrook told me.“It’s all over the Internet and he’s been on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live,’?” she said, “while me and my mother are afraid for our lives and have been for years. In 2004, Bergin got an 18-month sentence for throwing a phone at Philbrook’s 7-year-old niece, Mackenzie Murtagh, now 19, who said watching him on Kimmel made her want to “throw up.”“It makes me sick,” she said.
Tough not to see that one coming. I mean there are Massholes and then there are Massholes. You don’t talk and walk and look like these guys do unless you got a checkered past. It comes with the territory. It’s still a funny video though. You can’t take that away from them. They are the real deal for better or for worse.

PS – Speaking of doing background checks on people before putting them in the spotlight I still can’t believe Marky Mark got to host the Pope. I feel like when you get arrested for being an racist asshole that should eliminate you for life from Pope ceremonies.
