Call of Duty: Black Ops (XBOX, PS3, Wii, PC, DS)
Price: $59.99 || Official Site
Fanboys, man your battlestations because an off-year Call of Duty is here and hours of murking each other, trash talking and debating whether or not it’s better than Modern Warfare 2 are in store for everyone. Black Ops, the latest in the seven year old franchise, drops players into the biggest conflicts of the late 60’s, into battles that most of the gamers anticipating this game probably didn’t even know happened. So, all the youngin’s looking for a way to dupe their parents into buying a game that’s chock full of desensitizing violence, be sure to point out that Black Ops is an eight-hour history lesson too.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much new in this campaign besides the setting. Fans of the series will be able to comfortably pick up the controls without a learning curve. What does seem to be missing are the unforgettable plot moments that stay with you. This is a good, but not great, war story that may leave you with some cranial battle scars. Where COD: Black Ops really shines is in the polish of its multiplayer. Besides a slew of new, satisfying maps, multiplayer is spattered with mode tweaks that will give you a new outlook about the deathmatching on which so many of us have become jaded. The inclusion of contracts, where you can wager points (similar to Halo Reach’s daily challenges), is a very cool way to literally up the ante of ranked online play....because gambling isn’t addictive enough on its own and everything’s a little better when you add a touch of slaughter. Finally, Zombies are back and have infiltrated the game pretty thoroughly but some surprises are best left to newly occupied idle hands. See you in the shit, soldier.
