What makes a dutch oven a dutch oven?

what I mean is...how is a dutch oven any different than a heavy casserole dish w/ a lid?

Serious question, and if its a stupid one I don't care.

Is there a drip tray type function inside the pot? Or do I have 3 dutch ovens that I just haven't referred to as dutch ovens in our kitchen right now?

Any really thick gauge metal (think its mostly cast iron), with a solid metal lid. Basically anything that will hold heat for a long time......glass, thin metal pans, and some alloys suck as a substitute.

$199 at home goods.....I almost pulled the trigger on Friday.

I didn't mention before how versatile the DO is, stove top, grill, oven. You can even bury it covered in hot ambers and it will cook your dish.

got one of those Le Cresuet dutch ovens for our wedding, thought it was a huge waste of money. Those shits are expensive.

Why is a dutch oven better than a $30 crock pot?

Put your crock pot on the stove and sear up your choice of meat, then chuck it in the oven at 375. Don't get me wrong you could do it with another pan involved, but like I said the thing can do anything. You can even fill it with veg oil and deep fry.

got 2 different ones for our wedding. use them all the time.

much more variety in uses. no issue on stovetop or oven, or going back and forth between the two.

crock pot can't get hot enough to do things like searing cuts of meat or browning vegetables.

cheap crock pots also have shitty temperature control and can fuck up a meal.
