Montreal

Can't believe that thread got Shaq'ed and not restarted. Anyway, I'll be home on leave around the holidays and thinking about making my first real trip (went with my parents when I was like 8, which obviously doesn't count) to Montreal--any suggestions??

Go to a Saturday night Habs game when you're not at Chez Paris or Super Sexe.

I think former poster PatriotsNation went there for his bachelor party. He might have some good advice and a story to tell.

Chez Paree and Club Downtown

you'll be disappointed with the poutine

we stayed at Hotel de La Montagne.

there are sites with pretty good hotel deals, I'd do a google search for one of those rather than just booking through the hotel website. IMO its worth the extra $50/pp a night to stay in a decent hotel rather than some shitty Holiday Inn. I booked a "For Foodies" deal through this website and it gets you a free complimentary breakfast each day. The breakfast is legit, if I could go back in time I would have gone there everyday and just skipped lunch. Didn't try it till the last day though.

dropped out: mcm.

hotel de la montagne is a solid recommendation, but the anti-poutine sentiment is just plain wrong.

I took out $500 Canadian at a B of America sister bank (Scotia Bank) and was only charged $476 USD by my bank.

But in restaurants / bars / clubs/ stores the USD is weaker than the Canadian dollar. We were getting $18 for our American $20. Best bet is to bring little US cash and hit an ATM while you are there and take out Canadian. Also, credit card company's will charge you 2-3% surcharge for out of country use. Like everywhere else, cash is king.
