will be interesting to see what kind of contract jeter ends up with. must suck to 'have to' pay a guy $20+ mill a year to put up orlando cabrera numbers. some people can say he deserves 2/20, while others will say he deserves 4/100, and both will have valid points.

Wrong, no one could possibly justify 4/100 for him.

Mentioning it and justifying it are very different things. There is no possible way to make a case that he is worth 25mm per for 4 more years. Or even 1 more year.

Whatever he gets, he'll be overpaid. I'm guessing 3 and 60mm. Which is absurd based on what he'll give them over that time.

He's chasing 3000 hits, has 5 rings and, along with Rivera, is about as untouchable a Yankee as I've ever seen. He'll get pretty much what he asks for but if they win this year and after he gets #3000 next year what more does he have to play for? The love of the game? He's got more money than he'll ever need...

How? What did he say? He is the biggest Yankee/Jeter fellator ever....

Yankees should pay him the same as his market value, plus a bit more for his Mr. Yankee intangible.....and that doesn't approach anything near 4/100.

Take away the fact that he's "Derek Jeter"....what would he command if the Cardinals needed a SS and they made him an offer?

You can't talk about Jeter like he's a "normal" baseball player. He is the face of the Yankees, the richest team in the biggest city. Regular rules don't apply to him or the NYY. He'll put out a figure, the Yankees will say OK and that will be it. He'd never be seen in another uniform and thats the way it should be.

Right....but the 4/100 is way out of whack. I'm saying, tell me what another team might offer him. 2/25? 3/30? Whatever it is, add a reasonable premium for the "Jeter" factor. And you don't come anywhere near 4/100.

I've heard Francesa say that he might want something like 25mm per year so he's on par with Tex/CC/Arod's annual salary.....but the fact that he wants it doesn't justify it. He isn't anywhere near them as a player, and even the "jeter factor" doesn't bridge the gap. If he gets more than 3/60 or so, it's a joke.

Totally agree....but it shouldn't take 25mm per year to get that done. If he asks for that, he is robbing them. And putting them in a bad position because if they don't give him every dime he asks for, the idiot fan base will cry about it.

It's a crappy situation for the Yankees. I'm not going to shed a tear for them because they can afford whatever, but they are going into a negotiation knowing ahead of time that they will be taking a Louisville Slugger in the seat, sideways,

He should get the same that another aging member of the "core four" got. Posada got a 4 yr. / 60 million deal starting in 2008. In the end I don't care about the money. As long as the contract does not exceed 4 years it's fine with me.
The Orangemen are just a rock-solid, consistent winner that hasn't suffered a losing season since 1968-69.
