Today my very early stab at guessing the 10 Best Picture nominees has been posted as part of Movie City News’ Gurus o’ Gold feature. There seems to be some consensus among the 14 of us Oscar predictors as to seven of the eventual nominees. After that it’s pretty much a field day of shot-in-the-dark prognostication. Here is my estimated list of 10 (ranked by probability of making the cut next January) with my reasoning for including each film. We’ll see how wrong I am in just a matter of months!

1. The King’s Speech As soon as I saw this British drama in early September I knew it had the potential to go all the way in at least one major category. Right now its star, Colin Firth, is the man to beat for Best Actor, and it’s an absolute lock for a Best Picture nomination as well.

2. True Grit Four of the 14 “Gurusâ€

It's Good to Be 'King': First-Round Oscar Picks
Here are my first-stab Oscar predictions for GoldDerby.com's experts panel (alongside Michael Musto, Kevin Polowy, Keith Simanton, Anne Thompson and Susan Wloszczyna). I think I'm the first blogger who posted the words "King's Speech Oscar" at Telluride, but the more sources I consulted, the more I swapped it back and forth with The Social Network. I felt like Henry James, who said in political discussions, he was always of the opinion of the last speaker. But the King rules, and that's my final word! Until tomorrow.

Like everybody else, I'm betting on a rooster in a poke with the unknowable Coen brothers movie True Grit. The Fighter's magisterially marketed premiere made me favor it over Black Swan, whose fans were equally verklempt at Telluride. After Thursday's AFI premiere, they're doing frantic fouettes fast enough to corkscrew through to the center of the Earth, punching a Fighter fan at every turn. The two movies could incite fights on a million movie dates, which would be scarier than Winona Ryder in Black Swan -- and let me tell you, that's scary.

Early reviews on The Fighter don't seem great. If this movie turns Dickie Ecklund into a sympathetic figure, that would be a tragedy. Chris Bale is supposedly outstanding in that role.
