Capetown and the vineyards around Stellenbosch are pretty nice. There's a beach between Capetown and the Cape of Good Hope called The Boulders that has a penguin colony. That was trippy.

Just got back from DC for 4 days. Great city and wasn't pricey at all.

-Stayed at the Hotel Palomar in Dupont Circle. No complaints at all.

-Had three meals: Sequoia on the Waterfront in Georgetown, Central Michel Richard downtown and Brasserie Beck in McPherson Sq. Sequoia is whatever, just a typical place on the water, but the other two were outstanding:

Central Michel Richard: Fried chicken and mashed; outstanding. Lady had the lobster burger; it was good, but not what I expected. Fries were outstanding.

BB: Started with oysters (west coast, smaller) and a mushroom gruyere crepe/watercress salad. Amazing. Then went to mussels in white wine/garlic/parsley sauce and their signature frites. Finished it up with a beet salad with goat cheese and caramelized walnuts. Ridiculously good. They also have a legit 16 page beer menu, which is a little absurd, especially since some of them were $60 beers.

-The DC metro >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Boston's "T", and it isn't even close, although every walk out felt like Porter Square only 20 times worse. When the escalator breaks, it's torture.

-Dupont Circle was filled with what felt like 4,000,000 people when the US played in the World Cup and then we were treated to a Gay Parade on our way out to dinner the same night. 5TOOLER stepped out of the parade at one point and offered me Tejada/McCann for Halladay. No joke. Told the fruit to get back in marching order.

-Did every possible museum/monument/cemetery. Good stuff.


Overall, A-. Hadn't been back there in awhile. Was surprised at how clean it was. Still an ever present homeless population.

Sequoia was THE date place when we were in college. Went back a few years later and realized how extremely mediocre it was. They could do so much more with that setup and location

Going away with the old lady in the fall. Most likely a Caribbean destination.
Already done Aruba, Cancun, Jamaica, Bermuda (not Carib, I know), and Bahamas. Wanna try something new. She wants Cabo but I'm not keen on Mexico right now. Not looking for all-inclusive (don't like going somewhere 5 hours away and staying on same 10 acres all week).

What's up with the VI or Grenadine (sp?) Islands?

St. Barts is pretty laid back. Nice beaches, (French island... bare boobs on the beach), and a crazy approach by plane -- the airfield is at the base of a mountain so your plane usually goes into a stall at the top of the mountain and coasts down.

St. Barts is $$$$. If you just want to sit on perfect beaches with no one else in sight, Vieques is good for that. Not much in the way of nightlife though. St. John has busier beaches but also has a lot more to do, plus it's pretty easy to get to Tortola, Virgin Gorda or Jost Van Dyke for the day. Sounds like the places you've been are pretty touristy so St. John might seem quiet by comparison. Never been to the French West Indies but I assume it would be more expensive.

The Caymans........worth the extra $.

How about a cruise? I love cruising. One stop unpacking....mutliple destinations, casino on board, shit tons of food, you can't get bored.

Turks and Caicos too. You can rent a house for a couple grand for the week with maid service and usually a pool on your grounds on the beach.
I'll try and dig up the link for the rentals if you are interested. Good fishing here too.

The little time I spent on Grand Cayman was great (pit stop for a cruise). But I thought it was ridiculously expensive. I will poke around a little though.

All set with any more cruises. Not my thing, though I love boats.
