Am I Principled or Just Cheap?

Postby Jerry Thornton » Wed Oct 22, 2008 1:52 pm

I can't be the only one who's ever had this dilemma, but here goes:

A lady at work is retiring and someone is asking us all to throw 10 bucks into an envelope for her. Obviously a sawbuck is not going to send me into financial chaos, but I see no reason to do it. In the 10+ years I've been here, I can't ever remember the old wretch ever going out of her way to say a kind word to me. She doesn't work in my department. I never remember her attending a work event. On a few occasions she actually stood between my work friend and her cash drawer as if he was going to swipe money out of it. Furthermore, in the time I've been working here I've experienced both the birth of a baby and the death of my mother and don't recall her mentioning either.

I could cough up the 10-spot now and be done with it, but I think I'll hate myself for it. Right now I think I'd rather just symbolically buy myself a 12 pack or my Sweet Irish Rose some flowers with the money. What do you make of me?

Even the typo police would call that a misdemeanor offense. Correction made.

you should print out a fake 10 spot and put that in the envelope, that'll show her.

Buy some beers. Fuck that lady.

Less than 2 weeks into this job some old bag had a birthday, and I was told to pitch in ten bucks. I really didn't want to as I had never spoken to her before, and I hadn't even received my first paycheck. But I caved and paid. I have never forgiven myself for it.

Fight the power, JT!!!

Just do what I do. Tell them you don't have any cash on you and your ATM card is lost. Works everytime.

so you work around drawers full of cash, and you need 10 bucks, but don't want to spend your own money...

... I think the problem kind of solves itself, don't you?

Can't he just buy the beers and go home & bang his Sweet Irish Rose instead?

I think this all depends on how the $$ is collected. If it's one person going around to each employee, then you might have to pay-up or else you be looked-upon w/ scorn forever.

If it is anonymous, fuck it, keep your dough.

Done. Sorry, dude. I've been stranded on Blog Island the last week.

I'm with JJ. If it's one person collecting I would say to him "Fuck her. It's nothing personal brother, but she's never spoken a word to me when I had a kid and my mom passed away."

Also, why is she retiring? If she needs a collection before she "retires" it means she should still be working.

If I don't like the person I don't even go to their going away lunch. I think a couple people that have left here learned the hard way about how I really felt about them based on my lunch attendance, or lack thereof.
