himself. That was it.
"We were one-dimensional (without Roberts)," West coach Mike Pettine conceded. "Billy's a great runner, and we had to look for Billy to make the big plays."
So did everyone else.
Everywhere Lowe went Friday night,, Downingtown's Bryn Boggs went with him.
"Lowe's their main guy and I was trying to focus on him," Boggs said after his second interception of the game - on a pass intended for Lowe - had clinched the win for the Whippets.
Lowe took a beating against Downingtown. He rushed for only 33 yards on 12 carries and caught six passes for 26 yards,Hollister Online Shop, but every tackle or knockdown had to sting,/.
Pettine focused on defensive mistakes, even though his offense produced only one touchdown, 165 yards total offense, and three turnovers.
The Bucks' defense allowed 294 yards, but it made a goal-line stand in the second period and held a team averaging 34.4 points per game to just 14. Both Whippets touchdowns were on gadget plays, a reverse inside handoff to a receiver and a halfback option pass.
"I think defense was our Achilles heel,Louis Vuitton Taschen," Pettine said. "(Downingtown's) defense was a little better than ours. You win championships with defense. That was what got us to the state championship game last year."
Pettine's insistence that his defense had let him down seemed odd for a unit that had permitted only 54 points in 10 games after the season's second game, with 28 of those points in the two playoff games,Hollister Online.
In this final game it was the Bucks' offense that failed, not its defense,Hollister Online Shop.
Pettine gambled, moving 6-foot, 5-inch, 275-pound tackle Mike Gimbol to tight end, wearing number 35. The move for an added blocker didn't work, especially when Gimbol had to be taken out of the game in obvious passing situations.
"I think it hurt us overall," Pettine admitted, "but we had other problems inside (the offensive line)."
West's only problem this season was its inability to change once Roberts
went down. That was in the game with Truman, and Pettine conceded after the next game, with Council Rock, that there wasn't enough time between those two games to make some changes.
But Pettine had a month more after that to make offensive changes that weren't made,Hollister.
In a total of 96 offensive plays in the two playoff games, the Lowe/Snyder combination was involved in 69, and that doesn't include incomplete passes.
Until Gavin McKay was brought into the offense against Downingtown (a 43- yard run and four pass receptions for 54 yards),Hollister Shop, opposing defenses didn't have to pay attention to any West players other than Lowe and Snyder.
So Central Bucks West's 1994 season ended a little too early.
"There was nothing I could say tonight that would have made it easier," Pettine said after the game. "As the days go by they'll realize what a great season they had."
But it just wasn't offensive enough.
