The former owner of your favorite team treid to have a player whacked, and informed to the FBI and CIA....I'd say a smear campaign is a step up in behavior.

Steinbrenner hired a PI to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield, not quite "trying to have a player whacked". The subsequent suspension MLB gave to George was the best thing that ever happened to the Yankees.
