ncaa pool

anybody know what their respective pools are doing with the extra 2 play-in games?

they're not automatically 16 vs. 17, so you could in fact have people who put those teams through to the 2nd round.

I would think that most people would wait for the results from Tue/Weds night.

That makes the most sense. Just ignore the play-in stuff. (I haven't seen a blank bracket yet though).

we do a player pool every year. this new bracket is really screwing things up. we're still doing our draft on monday, but then we're allowed to cut and replace anyone who gets bounced in one of these brutal play in games. their stats don't count for those games.

That player pool thing sounds pretty cool, got any more details on how it's run.

Just sucks that you basically have 1 day to fill out a pool.

uconn - we do this:

there are 8 of us. each get 7 guys. snake draft. one of your guys has to be a 6-11 seed and one has to be a 12+ seed. you tally up points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals. so a game of 20-5-5-1-1 would net 32 points for that guy. obviously, you want good players who last a long time. picking guys on the national champion is typically the best way to win this thing.

we've done this for ten years. if i find the spreadsheets i can tell you the best games over the last ten years. and yes, raef lafrentz has one of them.

SC I've actually done something similar and we've deducted points for turnovers and guys can gain or lose points based on FG shooting. I go as far back as Pervis Ellison doing everything to dominate a college basketball game and routinely throwing up 50's. It was so great to see his game translate to the NBA.

I've always said Hollinger stole our shit and just tweaked it.

Game Score; the formula is PTS + 0.4 * FG - 0.7 * FGA - 0.4*(FTA - FT) + 0.7 * ORB + 0.3 * DRB + STL + 0.7 * AST + 0.7 * BLK - 0.4 * PF - TOV. Game Score was created by John Hollinger to give a rough measure of a player's productivity for a single game. The scale is similar to that of points scored, i.e., 40 is an outstanding performance, 10 is an average performance, etc.

Yea, we keep it pretty simple. If we were doing this at Harvard or MIT, there would be some sort of complex formula.

It's definitely fun, though.
