It came out a few years back but "Outliers" was a great read. Highly recommended. I'm definitely going to grab one of Gladwell's other books for my next reading tear if anyone has any suggestions.

Also I recently read Godin's "Linchpin" and while it seems awfully self-helpish at points there's some pretty good info in there. Certainly makes you reevaluate how you go about your career at the very least.

***Note that "Outliers" has approximately 1 footnote per page and Kindle readers inform me that they get placed at the end of chapters if you plan on reading it on a Kindle. I don't think I would have enjoyed that.

RA if you of all people read the first chapter of Outliers you would be hooked and you'd read the whole book in a week. Maybe two. I don't know how much you read.

It analyzes Canadian pro hockey players and their birthdates, then Czech hockey players and their birthdates (among other sports and birthdates).

I'm not going to ruin anything for you, should you choose to read it, but it's a huge eye opener.

And I assure you, you will read all the footnotes.*



*The reason they are footnotes and not displayed in parenthesis is due to the fact that they are extensively written and packed full of information, and though not essential to text, they are very beneficial to the overall enjoyment of it. This was probably the most well-researched book that I've read since my college days.

I used to be a voracious reader. Something about college killed it. I'm lucky if I finish two books a year now. But my uncle gave my the audiobook for it and he told me the same thing you did about the hockey player DOBs to hook me in. And I heard Gladwell out for a chapter or three. But I think he was centering in on a fluke stat. In other words, if there were no kids born in the months he cited, Canada still would've produced the same amount of hockey players, regardless of what fucking month they were born in. Months are parts of an arbitrary dating system/calendar imposed before our time that happens to work good and is convenient. But to assign one to a person's achievement on the ice or in life or is fucking ridiculous, no matter how brilliant the theorist.

EDIT: That, and audio books don't work for me. I do most of my driving in the 021-- so I need my antennae up at all times. Can't be taking in Gladwell while morons are trying to kill me.
