The money comes from the Department of Energy, the White House said in a news release.
Up to $1.5 billion in grants will be available to U.S. manufacturers to produce highly efficient batteries and their components for the vehicles. In addition, the department will be offering up to $500 million in grants to U.S. manufacturers to produce other components needed for electric vehicles, and another $400 million to demonstrate and evaluate plug-in hybrids and other electric infrastructure concepts.
