The Red Sox offered Victor Martinez a three-year, $36MM deal and a four-year $42MM deal before he signed in Detroit, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAAAHA

I'm not shocked or upset that Victor is gone. They made a decent offer, he's not a hall of famer.

Much like Ronnie B on Tooler's mom's face, they'll make a splash.

Cashman told Jeter to go find a deal. The Sox should absolutely send Jeter an offer.

Right, RB? Fucking no-brainer.

I'd be all for it. Can't be any worse than the post-Nomar contingent.

He's not a hall of famer, but they could have afforded him. if you are going to offer 4/42, then fuck it an offer 4/54. 4/42 is a joke... they had to know detroit was coming in with more, which means they had no intention of keeping him.

victor 3 year splits vs.:

Yankees: .275/.342/.877 ops/11 hr/22 rbi (8HR in the new yankee stadium)
Tampa: .396/.440/1.044/5/25
Toronto: .319/.380/.899/6/30

this is a guy who showed up in big games.

He's a good player. Doesn't really have a position, but he's a good hitter who is passable behind the plate.

Sure, they could have afforded him. They could theoretically afford anyone they want. And I don't care about their money. But I don't expect them to run their business without any limits. They have swung into Pats mode a little in the last couple years, offering what they think is market value or just slightly more. If the player can get more, he does. I really can't fault them for that.

It does suck when their offer was pretty close to what he ultimately got, but they have to draw a line somewhere and that doesn't really bother me. VMart's value is 100% in his bat, and they can replace that with some of the other moves they are supposedly looking at.

You guys really think Boston (or anyone) should make an offer to Jeter? What he wants is so grossly over his value, it's absurd. The Yankees offered more than anyone else would consider offering, and they obviously know it.

Offering Jeter would be dumb.

The money being spent on Ortiz was enough to keep Martinez (who could slide into the DH/1B role). Sox could still have traded for another bat

You can't compare this to the NFL where the cap dictates moves.

I'm not comparing cap/overall salary. But Boston doesn't seem interested in offering huge deals substantially over what they value a player at. And while I wish they just outbid Detroit for Martinez, I'm not going to complain about a decision like that.

It's easy for us to spend someone else's money. And when it goes wrong and they end up with a bunch of shitty or dead money (Lugo, Drew, Clement, REnteria, etc.), we just want them to keep throwing more at it. I get it....we want the best team possible....but I can see their point of view and I don't resent it.
