Mac App Store Will Launch January 6th [Apple]
After a few rounds of rumors and speculations about when exactly Apple would get its Mac App Store off the ground, the official word is in: January 6th. If you were getting me Mac Apps for Christmas, time to reevaluate!
There's no word on exactly how many apps will be available at launch, but 90 countries will have access from day one. The apps will be organized into categories that are similar to the iOS App Store: Education, Lifestyle, Games, etc. Presumably things like Graphics & Design will be given more weight, though, in an Mac OS environment.
As of the 6th, Snow Leopard users will be able to download the App Store for free as a software update. It'll feature the same one-click purchasing process to which you've become accustomed on your iPhone and iPad, and Apple keeps the same 30% of sales revenue that they do on the mobile side as well.
Of course, you'll still be able to download applications outside of Apple's walled garden. But for those of you for whom Big Brother fears are looming, take heart that Cydia for Mac is just around the corner, too.
