Whoa That’s Weird: Japanese Minor League Team Names
As you can see from the video, some of these names are so obscure even local Japanese people don’t know what they mean, looking at you Kagawa “Olive Guyners”.
I did some research of my own (on Japanese Wikipedia) and this is what I found:
“The team’s name comes from a combination of Kagawa Prefecture’s official tree (the olive tree) and the word for “strong” in Saluki-Ben (a local dialect of Japanese), Gaina. The word gaina is then morphed to look English-ish as “Guyner.”
Whoa. That’s Weird.
