ABC – For more than four months, a clear, tasteless liquid leaked out of Aundrea Aragon’s nose whenever she bent over, but doctors reassured her that it was only allergies. ”It wasn’t even dripping, it was pouring out of my nose,” said Aragon, a 35-year-old mother from Tucson, Ariz. “If I looked down or bent over, it would literally pore out of the left side of my nose. I had no control at all.” Even though doctors “blew off” her concerns, Aragon said that “deep down,” she knew something was seriously wrong. It was: Her brain was leaking cerebrospinal fluid through two cracks in the back of her sphenoid sinus, a condition that could have killed her. ”I am still kind of in shock,” said Aragon, who had surgery at the University of Arizona Medical Center in October. “I was very fortunate. They said I could get meningitis and go into a coma and die.” Aragon’s condition — a cerebrospinal fluid leak — is rare, occurring in only 1 in 100,000 or 1 in 200,000 patients, according to her surgeon, Dr. Alexander G. Chiu, chief of the division of otolaryngology.
You know how every time you go to the doctor he lectures you on how you don’t come in to get checked up on enough and how dangerous it is to read stuff on the internet and try and diagnose yourself? Welp you can toss that little argument straight out the window. Just cancel all the rest of your trips to the doctor. I mean sure I could take off work, make the trek to your office, put down my copay, deal with insurance issues, sit in your waiting room for 30 minutes reading old magazines, get put in the next room to wait 20 minutes with no magazines, make small talk with you while we pretend it’s totally normal you’re cupping my balls, then have you tell me nothing is wrong with me and it’s just allergies. Or, I could go on WebMD and just pick the worst fucking thing on there such as “brain leaking through nose” because chances are I have that and you’re too much of an asshole to realize it. Score 1 for the latter. Seriously what good is 19 years of med school if you can’t differentiate between “runny nose” and “brainbleed”? That ain’t snots on my cheeks bro, that’s a few pieces of my frontal lobes and a good chunk of the hippocampus. But yeah just give me some Claritin and hopefully it just clears itself up.
