Duluth News Tribune- Police say a small fire on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus was started when a student tried to make meth. WKOW-TV reported Sunday that the fire started early Saturday. The Rountree Commons dorm was evacuated for about an hour. Police said a student was trying to cook methamphetamine when the ingredients started a fire in a plastic waste basket. The student put out the fire and emergency crews were called. Five people suffered smoke-related injuries. The student was arrested. He’s being held on a tentative charge of attempted manufacturing of methamphetamine.
I’m honestly surprised stories like this don’t pop up more often, especially in recent years. If you go to school in the middle of nowhere and have too much time on your hands eventually you need to find a hobby. Sometimes that hobby is playing intramural basketball or joining an acapella group, and Sometimes that hobby is producing mass quantities of illegal drugs. This kid probably spent the last month crushing Breaking Bad on Netflix (which everyone knows is a gateway show), and even though most people have the restraint and common sense to not cook meth because it’s meth, can you really blame the guy for deciding to invest in some Sudafed and horse tranquilizers instead of hauling his ass to late night shifts at the dining hall to pay for beer money? I mean it probably would have helped if he had chose to operate a meth lab literally anywhere else besides his fucking dorm room, and actually knowing how to make meth without lighting everything on fire would have been a good start, but we can’t all be Heisenberg now can we?
